Are you looking to repurpose you older Canon camera, or just add some more functionality to the current one you have. Chances are may be in luck. Magic Lantern software adds many new features to your camera like intervalometer, HDR video, focus peaking and so much more. In this video I will show you were and how to download the current stable release and how to install it onto your Canon EOS DSLR Camera. About This Tip: For a while now I have been hesitant to add the Magic Lantern firmware to my older Canon 600D. Although I have been using it mostly as a backup camera, my wife also tends to borrow it. But I purchased her a new camera and thought it was now a great time to update the camera. The ML firmware does not replace your existing firmware, it runs on your SD card. The software adds many features to the camera that are extremely useful, mostly in the videography department. But still many things standard photographers can use also like focus peaking, zebra lines for over and underexposed areas, more bracketing options including focus bracketing and so much more. I had some issues creating this video. For some reason my 64GB SD card would not boot, even after installing the software from a smaller SD card. But in the end I learned a few things that I was able to pass down as trouble shooting information in this video. I start out showing the viewer were to download the stable release, this was confusing as Magic Lantern moved it from its current download location without any information for anyone looking for it. So I was able to show were the new link for the software is now located as well as go over a few install tips. I hope everyone finds this photo tip useful and informative. I look forward to everyones comments and suggestions if you have any, please post. This was done a few days after Magic Lantern announced a new experimental build for the 5D Mark III. As soon as I found out about it I downloaded the new build (magiclantern-crop_rec_4k.2017Apr06.5D3123), drove up into the hills and tried to get a few shots in before it got too dark. The vintage lenses I used probably aren't ideal for this sort of test but they are what I had with me at the time. The 4K and UHD modes are not completely stable, I couldn't really get them to be usuable, either before of lower frame rates (below 24fps) or because I could only record for a few seconds (as a result of the 5DIII's CF card write speed. 3K however is very useable... no limit to the recording time in 24p until you reach the end of your CF card space. The 5k (at 5fps) looks absolutely incredible and I may use that from time to time on product shots or static landscapes. All of these new experimental modes I likely won't use in any sort of production environment solely because the real time preview is not accurate (slow framerate and the framing doesn't match completely) but its very fun to play with. I'm sure the ML team will continue to develop these. I did not have a single corrupt frame nor did the camera come close to overheating after performing these tests for a good 40 minutes. At the moment I do feel the normal 1080p RAW is completely usable in a production environment and I never think twice about using it.

To see how I edit the HDR photos, please check out my tutorial at http://blog.hdrshooter.net/hdr-tutorial/ This is a little how to for taking HDR brackets using the Magic Lantern (ML 2.3 stable) firmware on a 5D mark II. It's very similar when you do it on other supported cameras, just the camera controls are a little different. Note. when I say half press the button, I mean the shutter button, and the camera is the whole time in M mode (as visible on the settings screen) to get more info on the Magic Lantern firmware please visit http://magiclantern.wikia.com for more about my photos and a HDR tutorial how to combine the brackets, please visit http://blog.hdrshooter.net

Having played with the new firmware from the Magic Lantern with RAW DNG made the following conclusions: moire and aliasing is still there you can even say worsened since skipping lines when reading from the sensor has not been canceled, Dynamic Range is no longer simply became more opportunities to post something to get all that is, provided that no Relight smke when it was about the bad, but that the same time a good thing? The more dense and detailed picture (a la Panasonic GH2, Canon's current color prettier IMHO), c color can now be run without limitation: the white balance hindsight, deep color management inherent in photographs RAW-format is now at your service, all the while, then will.Sorry for my bad english, just translated from Russian to English Google translator.

Visit the blog post for links to everything talked about in the video: http://jmprocreative.com/?p=3101 Support by liking on facebook: http://facebook.com/jmprocreative/ So I've finally gotten around to doing some in-depth side by side tests of the Magic Lantern RAW Video plugin module on my Canon 7D. The allure of 14bit RAW video allows for an extreme amount of flexibility in the post-production process. As well as, the surprising amount of added detail and clarity is quite impressive. The RAW video capability through the Magic Lantern "hack" add-on software for Canon DSLRs most certainly breathes new life and excitement into our beloved cameras. [/dropcap] But of course, all of the hype around RAW video comes at the expense of an extensive post-production workflow (for now) and of course the overall reliability and usability is not as stable as it could be. Not to mention the extreme amount of space you'll need in memory cards and hard drives to accommodate the RAW workflows. Other issues such as continuous video only possible at a max resolution of 1728x786 - a recording aspect ratio of 2.35:1 as opposed to 16:9. In this video I run through a few different shots of video comparing the same shots done in both the Magic Lantern RAW video as well as the Native H.264. There is definitely a great amount of possible issues to deal with such as "dead pixels" (as explained in the video) and not a huge amount of support just yet in the post production world.

Hello all and Happy 2017 ! Over the last 3 years magic lantern developers have been working on reverse engineering raw bit reduction , finally in late fall of 2016 a big break thought ! a1ex discovered that Canon has 10 , 12bit raw format all ready there it was a matter of turning on the options and of course make the code complaint to ML raw video format (MLV) . Sounds easy right ! Will not so as the Preview/Liveview is in 14bit and when you record 10 or 12bit the preview lockup but not the camera. About half of the cameras that support Magic Lantern have workable bit reduction (10-12) so don't expect to have bit reduction in any of the nightly builds just yet , if you want to test it out , you will have to compile the source code yourself or ask nicely on the 10-12bit thread and maybe someone will help you out . But it would be better if more people could help with "C" code to get all the cameras working with bit reductions. Shot this with my 5D Mark ii with new bit reduction code @ 10bit 2144x1076 23.976p in 3xcrop mode , used EF24-70 f2.8L @ 35mm with crop @ 2.60 that work out 91mm . Now with bit reduction i get about a 30% smaller file then extract with mlvfs to get my 16bit Cdng's. I uploaded the file as a Apple ProRes4444 for best quality. *Please Note* I have had many request for this experimental 10-12bit build , as ML has removed there link to it I will host it in my Google Drive for the next 4-6 weeks :) read this post for link http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=5601.msg178437#msg178437

daily planet5D 37 - magic lantern v2.3 - this ROCKS! from planet5D. Like this? Watch the latest episode of planet5D on Blip! http://blip.tv/planet5d/watch I finally made the time to sit down with my Canon EOS 5D Mark II and put Magic Lantern v2.3 on it - and man was I shocked at how complete and seemingly stable this release is! You have to get Magic Lantern - at least give it a try - after all it is free! My biggest reaction was that Iapos;m now disappointed that Canon hasnapos;t put more of these kinds of features in the latest round of cameras. If the Magic Lantern team can do it, why canapos;t Canon? Canon - youapos;re about to be trampled by the competition (did you see the announcement about the camera running Android?). This video is just over 30 minutes long - I got carried away with showing many of the features. Oh, and to get it uploaded, I had to upload in 540 resolution. Sorry about that too. Hope you enjoy it none the less. I recorded the screen with the Atomos Ninja-2 that Iapos;ve been testing out. Its been a while since I put out a video. Here ya go! inspired by Neumann films ( I highly recommended to check out his channel) Filmed, edited and uploaded within a week or so..I work alone so it gets hard and I can only do it on my free time. This was edited in Adobe After Effects CS6 and use some of Neumann's Blockbuster presets anddid some tweak and other minor effects. I hope you guys enjoy it, and if you like it please give a thumbs up! Next film I will be using Raw with Magic Lantern. With Magic Lantern the 5D Mark III can shoot full HD Raw both in full frame and a x3 Crop. So basically its both a Full Frame and a s16 camera. Canon 24-104/4, http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product... CF Card, http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product... 5D Markiii, http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product... I really am starting to enjoy the camera and the Magic Lantern more and more. The amount of detail is well beyond whats needed for youtube. And Raw and Full Frame... amazing. Also it feels nice to use a DSLR again, feels nostalgic. And it has zebra, peaking, waveform, meter, audio meters, vectorscope, etc so its all good. The focus was off in two or three shots since I forgot that EF glas isn't exactly trustworthy at the end of the focus throw. And in the graded shot it is over the top, I wanted the sky to really bleed, to see how far I can push it. Also notice how in the very last shot the IS really saves the flimsy tripod. I only had my light tripod that was sitting in my car. I bet it would be stable with my Manfrotto 519 that I used in the Red One videos. This is the first full test to capture film with my Canon 50D after the addition of the Magic Lantern firmware add-on, Stable Release v2.3. The video was taken as captured and put directly in iMovie 9.0.9. There was no change in color quality, only clipping and arranging. My friend Jon Survant was the pilot of the 1977 Cessna 172. The music was found on http://incompetech.com and was created by Kevin MacLeod.

Recorded with a 5D Mark II using MagicLantern RAW. I used the aspect ratio 2.35:1 with a cropped resolution of 1504x644, upscaled to 1920x1080 (with the letterbox bars). Every shot was filmed with the 50mm f/1.8 lens from Canon at a shutter speed of 1/50 and ISO 100-200. The real video quality of this footage is insanely detailed and much bigger in file size. I was really astonished by how much you can get out of the Canon EOS 5D MKII. Very cinematic and sharp. It ran smoothly but as you can notice there are some frame drops so I'll use RAW Video just for very special shots on my next short film projects. This is a test of the Magic Lantern unofficial firmware for the Canon 5D Mark III camera. ML enables more control over the camera, essentially giving the user RAW footage, custom cropping and other functions. The firmware is not that stable and the resulting files take up enormous space, so it's not for everyday work/filming. But it's nice to see how well the camera *could* be doing, if Canon had not "dumbed" it down. Be careful if you use it: Your camera could end up a brick. My workflow: 1) Install ML on camera. 2) Record movie to camera (with 2.35:1 crop in my case). 3) Transfer files to computer (iMac in my case). 4) Use raw2dng app to convert raw files to individual dng files (and a generic mov file). 5) Import dng files to After Effects and change settings in Camera raw until the picture looks good. 6) Export from AE to lossless mov files. 7) Import both mov files to Premiere Pro and put them on separate layers for comparison. 8) Export to new mov file and upload that to YouTube. As I stated in step 4 above, the raw2dng app creates both dng files *and* a generic mov file. This latter file resembles what it would normally look when filming to the camera's built-in H.264 compressed mov file, so I used that as a comparison. You might notice that the movie files, although put over each other, doesn't always "fit". That's because I can compensate for the lens distortion when importing the dng files into AE. NB: I used Magic Bullet Looks in Premiere Pro to create a different kind of picture style on the ML files. Help us caption & translate this video! http://amara.org/v/Fa7l/

This video is about the new MagicLantern Firmware for the Canon 7d. Here's a link to the magic lantern software - http://www.magiclantern.fm/whats-new/104-releases/140-first-7d-alpha-released Make sure you update to the newest firmware- 2.0.3 Generally it is always a good idea, I have been on jobs before where 7d's have gone down due to problems with the older firmware. When actually using the Firmware later you must click firmware update in the camera with the CF CARD W/MAGIC LANTERN ON IT and press the delete button for the menu. Hopefully I covered everything, feel free to leave a comment.

The easy way to convert .RAW movie data (Canon EOS 60D and more) to .DNG files which you can later edit in all Adobe software like "Camera Raw"... 1. Download the " raw2dng.exe" 2. Save it on your SD card (there where you have saved your .raw files) 3. Drag & drop the .raw file onto the "raw2dng.exe" 4. Wait until the conversion is finished Links and DL (converter): - http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=5404.0 Direct download: https://bitbucket.org/hudson/magic-lantern/downloads/RAw2dng.exe Magic Lantern 2.3 (stable release): http://www.magiclantern.fm/download RAW Video builds for Canon EOS 5d3, 5D2, 600D, 50D, 60D, 6D and 550D: - http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=5413.0 Magic Lantern... "*************************************************** * * * THIS IS DANGEROUS AND MIGHT DAMAGE YOUR CAMERA. * * NO WARRANTIES. NO GUARANTEES. DO NOT TAUNT. * * * *************************************************** If you are not comfortable with this, stop reading and delete the software before you are tempted to try running it on your camera. Please read the user guide carefully before installing this software. To repeat this important point: *************************************************** * * * THIS IS DANGEROUS AND MIGHT DAMAGE YOUR CAMERA. * * IF IT BREAKS, YOU GET TO KEEP BOTH PIECES. * * * *************************************************** IMPORTANT NOTES * If you have a bootable CF/SD card and have the DISKBOOT flag set in the camera (which the installer does), and you do not have an AUTOEXEC.BIN file on the card the camera WILL NOT BOOT. It will hang and not wake up until the battery is removed. * If you encounter a "locked up" camera, quickly remove the battery. Otherwise the ARM might be in a tight-loop and get very hot, very quickly. Your battery will run down and your LCD might show some discoloration. * When in doubt, remove the battery and reboot. * And, remember that this software can damage or destroy your camera." Testing 7D footage at higher bit rates. Used Magic Lantern with a "controlled"BitRate of 3.6x, "ALL-I" mode and a 2 frame buffer flush on a 21MB/s card (this was the card's stable limit). The recording was stable and continued for the full 4GB limit. Sources were H.264 baseline 5.0 at 42Mbps and 154Mbps, then edited (applied a basic sharpen filter) and re-encoded in Final Cut Pro 7 with H.264 Main 5.1 at 137Mbps ...and then Youtube compression of course at probably like 8Mbps :/ Full screen and 1080p mode helps to see the difference, YouTube will compress them both down quite a bit but at least you can see higher bit rate footage sharpens better in post ;D http://upload.g3gg0.de/pub_files/c129fd81c100f3d966dadcde7d1284af/7D000203_ML.FIR

I have returned to using Magic Lantern for my DSLR after a long period. They really have improved the program and its running very stable. Heaps of interesting and funky features, one of which is filming HDR footage. Although my camera isn't ideal for action shots with the feature on, for slow moving content such as non traffic outdoor scenes, it's very usable. With the HDR mode active, you set two ISO values for your scene's highlight and shadow exposures. Recording the footage has each high and low exposure sequentially recorded. At 25fps recording, every odd numbered frame is one exposure, every even numbered frame is exposed the other exposure. After converting the footage, you essentially have a video piece with a frame rate half of what you had filmed at, hence 50 or 60fps footage would ultimately be converted to 25 or 30fps respective. Initially i'd filmed this in 1080p but later converted down to 720p just to allow myself to render and export faster. This is just a test piece just to demonstrate the final footage. Edited in FCP 7 and HDR Glogger.mobi

Just randomly happened to have some comparable shots on these two cameras from training one day in September. They were taken by people who were not very familiar with the cameras at the time, and certainly much better footage could be taken with each of them. As I say in the title, it's completely unscientific, but here you go. Lol The T3i had the stable version of Magic Lantern on it, shooting at the highest possible bitrate that it would do reliably, about 46-48Mbps. It was on a $90 Chinese glidecam style stabilizer from eBay, and had the 18-55mm kit lens locked at 18mm focused to almost infinity at f8. The 70D was brand new, and being operated in automatic everything mode at a low-ish bitrate, about 32Mbps, with a Canon "L" 17-40mm lens on it (hand held). Messing with the Cineon Converter in log to linear mode really brings the 70D footage to life, it's an exciting camera.

Just doing some tests with the potential RAW video capabilities that Magic Lantern is working on. It's still in its beta stages, but I can definitely see myself using it often when it's more stable! Shot at 1280x540 @ 24p with a Sandisk Extreme 16gb card (60MB/s)

Major breakthrough!! This is my first 1080p test video at 30fps - I think I've finally discovered how to change the recording frame rate. Discussion here: http://groups.google.com/group/ml-devel/browse_thread/thread/4b4dc8975821dfb4 Build thread with latest updates for 500d/T1i Magic Lantern: http://chdk.setepontos.com/index.php?topic=5971.new#new I shot it at 0.1x CBR (constant bit-rate) because it buffers out fast (and stops recording) - I'm suspecting the camera's buffers aren't made to process 1080p video at 30fps, so I think that will be the next task to figure out. This is great news for T1i owners - stable 1080p video @ 30fps coming soon!!!!

In this video I share with you my post production workflow for magic lantern raw video. Shot on the 5D mark III and processed in davinci resolve. My LUT: https://www.dropbox.com/s/p2keuag2uh0zm00/MTL_LUT_V1.0.CUBE.zip?dl=0 Get MLVFS: http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=13152.0 For a long time I was frustrated by the process of getting raw footage to look just like the h264 image I loved (with the added benefits of sharpness and dynamic range). I spent a few months trying to figure out the best way to emulate the internal codec. After many failed attempts I finally created a LUT that comes very close and accurately converts Raw footage to a very beautiful looking canon-esque image. I've included lots of sample footage so that you can decide if you like it or not. Using Davinci Resolve, I walk you through the entire process (except for the DNG conversion) from raw to a flawless end product ready for editing.
