ArrrrCamp 2014- Unicorn Unix Magic Tricks
By, Thorsten Ball A couple of years ago, when I set out to really understand Unix from a developer's perspective, I found one invaluable resource for my Unix studies: the source code of the Unicorn web server. When I first encountered Unicorn, it seemed like magic to me: just by sending different signals to the server I could control important runtime settings. Unicorn allows me to scale the number of worker processes simply by sending a signal. Reloading configuration files and reopening log files is possible by sending signals. It even allows me to hot reload code once deployed. Again, all I need to do is send it a signal. But how does it do all that? Magic? This talk answers exactly this question. We'll take a look at small snippets of the Unicorn source code and see that it isn't magic, but plain old Unix: forking, signal handling, pipes (even self-pipes), pre-spawning, master-worker architecture, file descriptor handling, system calls, the classic socket/bind/listen/accept sequence, Unix sockets, PID files and a lot more. There is even `eval`, but I'll keep quiet about that, I promise. Unicorn is full of Unix. By studying its code we do not only learn how one of the most important pieces of Ruby infrastructure works, but also how Unix systems work. The talk will provide you with a foundation for programming in the Unix environment and show you how to leverage the powers of Unix. Help us caption & translate this video! http://amara.org/v/FaTj/

Let's Play Jurassic Park: The Game Ep.03 It's A UNIX System
On the third episode of Let's Play Jurassic Park: The Game, the Hardings have a chat in the maintenance shed about the events they witnessed. In the morning, they emerge to find both Rexy and the Trikes are gone. However, the staff jeep is also wrecked, so they'll need another way to get to the Visitor's Center with the injured Nima. However, a mysterious third party is watching them over the Jurassic Park monitoring system. Since it's a Unix system, she knows it, and sends a tour vehicle to bring them to the Center. On the drive, we struggle through some Spanish to convince Nima to calm down and relax. Finally, the group arrives at the Visitor's Center to find it trashed, and with no sign of Hammond, his visitors, or the park staff.

Unix Magic Trick: Bulk rename files/directories with "Rename" Command
The "rename" command is one the little tools in my Unix toolbox that has saved me intense amounts of time in the past. This little gem requires a regular expression pattern given to know what to match and replace. This video is a real-world example. I have this directory where I've been dumping my eBooks as I collect them. I had just been dumping everything in one flat directory. But the collection got large. So I made directories prefixed with "Category - " which helped me visually distinguish my unsorted directories. Once they were all sorted, then I was left with what you see, a bunch of directories with this same prefix. Then I made this video illustrating I can use the rename command to simply change or remove this prefix. This is a comically basic example of what this rename program can do. No matter, this on its own is very handy. I install it easily on macOS via Homebrew. Windows users could probably leverage it if they install the Linux subsystem on Windows 10. Obviously Linux/BSD users can just install it with their regular package managers.

Jurassic Park - Computer Screen Hack
This is the command line stuff that Arnold typed when he was trying to fix Dennis's hacking (when he was trying to out hack the hacker) on the Unix computer. The words typed are based on what Arnold spoke, not based on what was actually typed on the screen in the movie (there is a difference). I created this using Microsoft PowerPoint 2010 and its ability to create video files of the slide show.

You Didn't Say the Magic Word - Jurassic Park FULL SCENE - Sunday Movies
SUNDAY MOVIES!!! Join us for this collection of full scenes from the 1993 movie! Jurassic Park is the property of Universal. #GameGods #SundayMovies #JurassicWorld #FallenKingdom Jurassic Park is a 1993 American science-fiction adventure film directed by Steven Spielberg and produced by Kathleen Kennedy and Gerald R. Molen. The first installment in the Jurassic Park franchise, it is based on the 1990 novel of the same name by Michael Crichton and a screenplay written by Crichton and David Koepp. The film is set on the fictional island of Isla Nublar, located off Central America's Pacific Coast near Costa Rica, where billionaire philanthropist John Hammond and a small team of genetic scientists have created a wildlife park of cloned dinosaurs. When industrial sabotage leads to a catastrophic shutdown of the park's power facilities and security precautions, a small group of visitors, along with Hammond's grandchildren, struggle to survive and escape the perilous island. Before Crichton's novel was published, four studios put in bids for its film rights. With the backing of Universal Studios, Spielberg acquired the rights for $1.5 million before its publication in 1990; Crichton was hired for an additional $500,000 to adapt the novel for the screen. Koepp wrote the final draft, which left out much of the novel's exposition and violence and made numerous changes to the characters. Filming took place in California and Hawaii between August and November 1992, and post-production rolled until May 1993, supervised by Spielberg in Poland as he filmed Schindler's List. The dinosaurs were created with groundbreaking computer-generated imagery by Industrial Light & Magic and with life-sized animatronic dinosaurs built by Stan Winston's team. To showcase the film's sound design, which included a mixture of various animal noises for the dinosaur roars, Spielberg invested in the creation of DTS, a company specializing in digital surround sound formats. Following an extensive $65 million marketing campaign, which included licensing deals with 100 companies, Jurassic Park grossed over $914 million worldwide in its original theatrical run, becoming the highest-grossing film of 1993 and the highest-grossing film ever at the time, a record held until the release of Titanic (1997). It was well received by critics, who praised its special effects, John Williams' musical score, and Spielberg's direction. Following its 3D re-release in 2013 to celebrate its 20th anniversary, Jurassic Park became the seventeenth film in history to surpass $1 billion in ticket sales. The film won more than twenty awards, including three Academy Awards for its technical achievements in visual effects and sound design. Jurassic Park is considered a landmark in the development of computer-generated imagery and animatronic visual effects, and was followed by three commercially successful sequels, The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997), Jurassic Park III (2001), and Jurassic World (2015). A fifth film, titled Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, was released in June 2018. AT&T Archives: Bottle of Magic
See more from the AT&T Archives at http://techchannel.att.com/archives Bottle of Magic traces the development of the electron tube from the pioneering efforts of such scientists as Lee de Forest, Thomas Edison, and John Fleming, then demonstrates the role the tube played in our society. The audion, later known as the vacuum tube, had revolutionized long distance voice communication, from radio to telephony in the years between the World Wars. This picture shows how, in the hands of Bell system scientists, the first three-element electron tube was fashioned into a tool for amplifying long distance telephone voice currents. As the story progresses, we see the electron tube applied first to the transcontinental telephone in 1915, through to transoceanic radiotelephony, public address systems, commercial broadcasting and television, radar, and radio relay. Following these historical sequences, the film takes the audience behind the scenes in a Western Electric plant, where the components are being made by men and women. The film includes animation of how a vacuum tube works. The vacuum tube was supplanted in the 1950s and 60s by more reliable, less power-hungry transistors. Today, vacuum tubes are mostly obsolete, though audiophiles and musicians still swear by the vacuum tube's distinct signature in audio amplification. Until recently, a common form of vacuum tube was the cathode ray tube, also known as a CRT. Microwave ovens still use a magnetron, another form of electron tube. Data Recovery on a Formatted Drive with TestDisk by Britec
Data Recovery on a Formatted Drive with TestDisk TestDisk & PhotoRec Download: http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk_Download TestDisk is a powerful free data recovery software! It was primarily designed to help recover lost partitions and/or make non-booting disks bootable again when these symptoms are caused by faulty software, certain types of viruses or human error (such as accidentally deleting a Partition Table). Partition table recovery using TestDisk is really easy. TestDisk can * Fix partition table, recover deleted partition * Recover FAT32 boot sector from its backup * Rebuild FAT12/FAT16/FAT32 boot sector * Fix FAT tables * Rebuild NTFS boot sector * Recover NTFS boot sector from its backup * Fix MFT using MFT mirror * Locate ext2/ext3 Backup SuperBlock * Undelete files from FAT, NTFS and ext2 filesystem * Copy files from deleted FAT, NTFS and ext2/ext3 partitions. TestDisk has features for both novices and experts. CHM Revolutionaries: The Idea Factory- Bell Labs and the Great Age of American Innovation
[Recorded: March 28, 2012] Bell Laboratories, which thrived from the 1920s to the 1980s, was the most innovative and productive institution of the twentieth century. Long before America's brightest scientific minds began migrating west to Silicon Valley, they flocked to this sylvan campus in the New Jersey suburbs built and funded by AT&T. At its peak, Bell Labs employed nearly fifteen thousand people, twelve hundred of whom had PhDs. Thirteen would go on to win Nobel prizes. It was a citadel of science and scholarship as well as a hotbed of creative thinking. It was, in effect, a factory of ideas whose workings have remained largely hidden until now. New York Times Magazine writer Jon Gertner unveils the unique magic of Bell Labs through the eyes and actions of its scientists. These ingenious, often eccentric men would become revolutionaries, and sometimes legends, whether for inventing radio astronomy in their spare time (and on the company's dime), riding unicycles through the corridors, or pioneering the principles that propel today's technology. In these pages, we learn how radar came to be, and lasers, transistors, satellites, mobile phones, and much more. Even more important, Gertner reveals the forces that set off this explosion of creativity. Bell Labs combined the best aspects of the academic and corporate worlds, hiring the brightest and usually the youngest minds, creating a culture and even an architecture that forced employees in different fields to work together, in virtually complete intellectual freedom, with little pressure to create moneymaking innovations. In Gertner's portrait, we come to understand why both researchers and business leaders look to Bell Labs as a model and long to incorporate its magic into their own work. Join author Jon Gertner for a fascinating conversation with KQED's Dave Iverson about the people and history of Bell Labs, and the ways it fostered a culture of innovation and ideas.

Unix Girl by Captain Firebutton
This is a song written by myself and arranged performed by Ottawa-based rock group Captain Firebutton. Captain Firebutton was active between 2004 and 2009 and consisted of me (acoustic guitar, saxophone, backing vocals), Alex McFarlane (percussion, backing vocals), Cody Fox (bass, backing vocals), Mike Paterson (keyboards, backing vocals), and John-Alexander Weston (electric guitar, lead vocals, backing vocals). The song is a track on Firebutton's self-titled EP released in 2009. The video features photos by Jesse Dybka of Jesse Dybka photography (www.jessedybka.com) Unix Girl is kind of an interesting song. I wrote it while thinking about an argument I had had with my sister some months previously. I don't remember what it was about but I remember that my contention at the time was that she knew nothing about the thing we were arguing about and was simply regurgitating what she had heard on TV. I'm not sure whether that was true or not but it inspired this song. The "pseudo-girl" and "plastic boy" were characters I invented who spend all their time absorbing information online and through television and allow those sources to form their opinions rather than thinking critically. When we recorded the track we wanted to retain the theme of technology corrupting and the "brain-dead" nature of the characters in the song. The drums ended up really processed-sounding to reflect this (which I hated but now realize was a really good idea) and we incorporated TV static into the song as well. I insisted from early on that I wanted the sound of a "flatline" on an EKG to be in the song to indicate, I suppose, the death of independent thought. That's me being artistic and pretentious! But we got it in there and it fades nicely into the slide guitar played by the one and only John-Alexander Weston, who basically learned how to play it for the song. The other neat addition to the song was a news report monologue written and spoken by Cody Fox that helps add a sort of media saturation to the song. As a plus, it was totally a sci-fi futuristic news report too. For anyone interested, the exact monologue reads "In other news, the world's first synthetic human was assassinated today while speaking before a panel of world and religious leaders. We now go live to Craig Yemensky for more on the story." The reporter's name comes from my middle name and John's mother's maiden name. I always loved playing this song live because all of a sudden John would sit down and pull out this weird guitar and everyone in the crowd would suddenly shut up and start craning their necks to see what was going on. And then John and I would just play a little acoustic guitar/slide guitar jam which would slowly segue into the beginning of the song, which was always very fun. I can't get enough of that thing. Hope you enjoy the song!
